COMMON NAME:
Violet-Grey Bolete

DESCRIPTION:
Grey-violet mushroom with white pores and violet stalk.
FRUIT BODY:
Cap 2-6" (5-15cm) wide with velvety surface when young turning smooth and dry, violet to purple when young developing gray and brown tones with age. Stalk 3 1/4 - 4 3/4" (8-12cm) long, 3/8-5/8" (1-1.5cm) thick; smooth.
FERTILE SURFACE:
Pores whitish developing pink-tannish tones in age; unchanging when bruised; spore print pinkish brown.
FLESH:
White.
LOOK ALIKES:
Tylopilus violatinctus, Tylopilus variobrunneus
ODOR & TASTE:
Very bitter taste.
HABITAT & SEASON:
Found on the ground near deciduous trees, especially oak, from June-September.
EDIBILITY / USES:
Inedible.
OTHER NOTES:
A beautiful, fleshy mushroom, but too bitter to eat.
